As the policy of reform and opening up continuously deepened, it was taking a full participation in international specialization and cooperation. Undoubtedly, it became a new topic for China's development. Nowadays, great progress has been made in various industries and science and technologies in China, however, there is still a certain gap between China and foreign countries especially in Europe in regard to technology innovation and R & D.Since the industrial revolution, some Europe countries have always played a decisive role in science and technology development in the world, for which the translation of science and technology was born and grew up. As more and more foreign owned enterprises and Sino-foreign joint ventures are developing vigorously, advanced experience, theory and technology of foreign countries in language of English are also introduced into China, thus making English-Chinese translation of science and technology increasingly prominent.This report deals with one of the representative types in scientific and technical translation, namely manual translation. The author takes the English to Chinese translation task of Installation, Operating, Maintenance and Format Change Manual for Machine Model:B8B/NDL3 MULTI as an example to analysis the translation skills and methods in such science and technical manual translation. For the convenience of standard operation and clear knowledge to maintenance, it was required that the translation should be clear in concept for a accurate and easy understanding, compact in word and structure, standard in language,formal in tone, strong in logicality and sufficient in information; any abridgment is never permitted and appropriate explanation and a high degree of specialization shall be done to make a correspondence with the source language and annotated picture so as to guide the operation.During the process of translation, practice report focuses on discussing of translation methods and techniques applied in the instruction manual oriented indicative technology article by analyzing translation cases. The three main issues include the English-Chinese translation of mass uncommon words, phrases and long sentences existed in the manual;highly specialization and preciseness in language translation on the basis of appropriate sentence structure translation; English words nominalization in scientific and technical article.In the practice report, firstly the author makes a general introduction to the translation program including the content, structure and language feature in the manual, then present and analyze in-depth the difficulties and applied translation methods in the process. At last the author illustrates the inspiration and experience obtained in the practice and noted problems remain to be solved.The report shows that science and technology manual translation, as a type of applicative translation, contains indicative structural units of words, sentences, paragraphs,chapters which intent to achieve the purposes of serving communicative function of technical article by using respective function. Installation Instructions have some characteristics different from other translations since the style and norms restrict such as the rigor requirement for structure and precise in translation, professional express in terms. These features are worthy of further study and serious regards. The author also hopes that this report can provide more references for translators of scientific and technical article and translation enthusiast.
