Functionalist Translation Theory And Its Application To The Chinese-English Translation Of Scientific Pragmatic Texts

With the development of science and technology and the entrance of WTO, interaction between China and the world has been increasing. The translation of pragmatic texts related with science and technology is highly required. This dissertation, based on the functionalist theories, discusses the translation of scientific pragmatic texts and analyzes the translation strategy and translation errors.In functionalist theories, translation is regarded as a kind of purposeful, interactive, interpersonal, and intercultural action. The translation activity connects with the initiator, the translator, the source-text author and the target-text reader. Translation brief plays an important part in the translation process. It decides the choice of the translation strategy and is the judgment of the translation error. The main feature of scientific pragmatic texts is informative. The purpose of translation of scientific pragmatic text is to convey the information of source text to the target readers with instrumental strategy. This dissertation tentatively applies functionalist theory to the translation of scientific pragmatic texts.
