The interpreter participated in the liaison interpreting of the “Seminar of Professor Shirley Wood's Education Thoughts” on July 11, 2015. The audience is a foreign teacher, who is interested in Professor Wood' amazing life story. Most of the attendees spoke in Chinese, therefore the foreign teacher needed an English interpreter on the scene. The interpreting work includes character descriptions, representative's speech, casual conversations, visit and group photos. The interpreting experience is presented in the form of an interpreting practice report. The report consists of the description of the interpreting task, the interpreting process, the example analysis including discussion of cultural mediator as an interpreter, interpreting methods in detail, and the summary of the interpreting experience. The report focuses on the difficulties during the interpreting and makes analyses and summary of specific examples according to the Interpretive Theory of Translation, which emphasizes that interpreting goal is communicative meaning, rather than the linguistic symbol. The interpreter should grasp the meaning of the source language, instead of pursuing the equivalence between the two languages. This one of viewpoints and propositions of the theory has guiding significance on the interpreting of the Chinese run-on sentences.Chinese is parataxis-prominent, while English is hypotaxis-prominent. When making an interpreting between the two languages, the interpreter should keep in mind the differences of them.
