| With high development of globalization, China has undergone earth-shaking historic changes in almost every walk, including education. Universities and colleges at home and abroad are focusing on mutual co-operations to realize the globalization of education. Therefore, an increasing number of educational institutions and projects co-run by China and foreign countries are emerging one after another. Despite the fact that more and more students can understand the lectures given by foreign teachers, lecture interpreting is still needed in some schools, such as some art colleges whose students? English level is still low. This thesis is based on the author?s practice of lecture interpreting in graphic design course in Modern International Art & Design Academy of Chongqing Technology and Business University(MIADA for short in following parts) and the author?s experience of lecture interpreting is used as a case study for her thesis. In addition to the introduction and the conclusion, this thesis is divided into four parts. The first part is description of the task. In this part the author makes a brief introduction to MIADA, the graphic design course and its features. The requirements for lecture interpreting and lecture interpreters are also included in this part. The second part is process description. In this part, the author describes the preparation work for the task and the theoretical preparation. According to requirements and characteristics of the task, the rules of skopos, coherence and fidelity are the main interpretation rules the author adopted to guide the interpreting. The third part is the main body of the thesis, in which the author demonstrates the problems she encountered in interpreting, including the problems of long and complex sentence, cultural differences between Holland and China, idioms and terminologies involved in this course, extensive background information in graphic design class and Dutch accent. Some specific examples selected from the lecture interpreting are analyzed to illustrate the techniques the author used in the process of interpretation, such as the techniques of short-term memory, meaning-based interpretation, amplification and omission, and extension. In the end, the author sums up the experience learned from this lecture interpreting project, pointing out that an interpreter should make adequate preparations for a task, follow proper interpretation principles as guidance in interpreting and apply appropriate interpretation techniques according to different features and requirements of a task. In addition, the author realizes that in order to become a qualified interpreter, his or her professional competence should be improved and comprehensive knowledge should be expanded. Equally, good qualities of conscientiousness and strictness are requisite. Also abundant practices are necessary to improve his or her interpretation ability. |
