The interdisciplinary trend in second language acquisition research has been more popular in recent years, and it is especially crucial to employ diverse theoretical methods to investigate second language learning patterns.Domestic research on second language acquisition is pretty well established, however, there is a scarcity of studies on the development of second language sociolinguistic competence.Sociolinguistics and Second Language Acquisition: Learning to Use Language in Context takes sociolinguistic variants as the springboard, explaining the influence of social factors on language forms and how to regulate language teaching from the perspective of sociolinguistics, which has high theoretical value and practical values. Therefore, the translator takes it as the source text for this English-Chinese translation project. The source text is a comprehensive textbook, which belongs to academic text and has strong practicality. The book is professional and rigorous in wording, complex and diverse in sentence style, objective and novel in viewpoint, and systematic and clear in logic, reflecting the textual function of mainly conveying information. And how to balance the academic and readability of the translation is the biggest challenge encountered in this translation practice. On the basis of the translation of academic texts, this report elaborates on the typical problems encountered in the practice process with the framework of “comprehension, expression, and adaptation”(the CEA framework)proposed by Li Changshuan and Lynette Shi.In“comprehension”,it primarily entails understanding word meanings, sentence structures, and background knowledge. In “expression”,it mainly involves static and dynamic conversion, sentence segmentation and integration, expression of passive voice, and information flow. In“adaption”,it is chiefly concerned with amplification, omission, and avoidance of Euro-Chinese.Only by understanding the linguistic details, ensuring logical coherence, and taking care of the readers’ feelings can the translation achieve the function of cultural communication. This translation practice aims to enrich the theoretical framework and teaching practice related to second language acquisition. At the same time, the translator hopes to provide a reference for the translation of academic texts and achieve the purpose of conveying academic views, exchanging translation experiences, and inspiring target readers by exploring the difficulties encountered in the practice and the related translation strategies.
