Teaching overseas students how to read and write Chinese characters has never been easy. Different problems may occur in teaching different students. In the case of Japanese students, they tend to be too optimistic about learning Chinese characters which are close to kanji in their own language. Chinese teachers too, for the same reason, often believe that it would be easier for Japanese students to learn Chinese characters which could cause problems in achieving teaching objectives. The author has collected and studied examples of wrongly written Chinese characters by Japanese students by searching HSK Dynamic Essay Corpus, and decides that those errors fall into the following categories, namely, (1) mistaking kanjis for Chinese characters,(2)confusing characters with similar forms or sounds, for example,? with ?, and ? with ?,(3)confusing simplified Chinese characters with the original complex forms, for example,? with ?,and ? with ?,and (4) other errors involving wrongly used radicals, incorrect number of strokes, improper forms, and nonexistent characters, etc. These problems may attribute to a number of reasons such as the complexity of Chinese characters, improper teaching methods, improper learning attitudes, and the influences of students'mother tongue.Accordingly, the author holds that students should be more serious in learning Chinese characters, and teachers should work on enhancing students'understanding of Chinese characters by showing the origin of these characters and their evolution, and pay more attention to writing exercises on the part of students.
