Communicative Approach is very popular in Chinese language teaching.However,how to apply it to English teaching effectively remains a problem.English teaching of non-state run schools pay too much attention to the examination,most of the English teaching neglect to develop the communicative competence of the students.Based on my teaching experiences of College English,the application of Communicative Approach in College English teaching is found to be an effective way to alter the tendency of utilitarianism.The theoretical basis of Communicative Approach is Sociolinguistics which was originated in the late 1960s.The role of Communicative Approach is "using languages to learn" and "learning languages" rather than "learning languages".The purpose of Communicative Approach is to let students attain communicative competence.This dissertation is an empirical one which is conducted to apply Communicative Approach to College English teaching and to improve students' interests in English learning.Then through analyzing the result of application of Communicative Approach,the author attempts to prove that the application of Communicative Approach in College English.teaching made a positive functiorn on enhance the communicative competence of students in some respect.This research is conducted in Nanjing Normal School Taizhou College,in which four classes are selected as the research subjects.Two classes among them belong to the control group,and the other two classes belong to experiment group.All these classes take a pre-experiment test.The Communicative Approach treatment is carried on in experiment group for 38 academic hours.Then both two groups have a post-experiment test.All the data are collected in order to examine the result accurately,some statistics analysis from the perspective of quantity and quality are conducted.This research result demonstrated that the application of Communicative Approach in College English teaching has made English teaching effective and meaningful and positively improved the student communicative competence.
