This is a report based on the translation of Chapter One of Policing: Development and Contemporary Practice. In particular, it is an analysis of English culture-loaded words and corresponding translation methods conducted by the writer of the report. Written by Peter Joyce, the famous contemporary British jurist, Policing: Development and Contemporary Practice is an English legal book mainly concerning the development process of British policing. During the practical translation of the book, the author of the report has encountered many English legal culture-loaded words. As equivalents of them can hardly be found in Chinese due to the enormous culture differences between English legal culture and Chinese legal culture, this increases the difficulty of translating legal English into legal Chinese. The author of the report mainly focuses on solving the problems caused by legal culture-loaded words from the following two aspects and concludes the experiences and lessons learned from this translation practice. On the one hand, after consulting relevant literature information and materials, the author of the report strives to discuss and analyze the relationships among legal culture, legal language and legal translation so as to explore the cause of formation of legal culture-loaded words and the relevant difficulties of translation caused by them. On the other hand, under the guidance of domestication and foreignization, the author of the report, respectively, discusses the application of the both two translation strategies and proposes six translation methods, including paraphrase, amplification, omission, literal translation, transliteration, and transliteration with annotation, which are exemplified by examples selected from chapter one of Policing: Development and Contemporary Practice. The translation of legal culture-loaded words requires not only the conversion of language but also the conversion of culture. The translator would have to fully understand both the English legal culture and the Chinese legal culture and carefully adopt appropriate translation method in order to faithfully and effectively pass the information of the original text to meet the demands of the target readers.
