The choice between foreignization and domestication theories has been a difficult one for every translator.Foreignization theory holds that translation should be loyal to the author, putting emphasis on keeping all the cultural elements of the source text.Domestication theory, however, holds that translation should be loyal to the target readers, attaching importance to expression of target language. However, overforeignization will make the translation difficult to read, while overdomestication will make it ignore cultural elements in the source text.To work efficiently, translators often need to combine the two theories together. This thesis is based on the translation of Matthew Desmond's work Evicted. The author describes the poverty of the American underclass, and howthey were evicted by their landlords. The language of the text is.plain but imbedded with many cultural elements. The culture-loaded word is a difficulty during the translation process, and this thesis attempts to study the translation of the culture-loaded words in the text.In the first part, this thesis introduces the history and perspectives of the foreignization and domestication theories, and characteristics of culture-loaded wo.rds.Guided by the theories, the foreignization and domestication strategies are adopted in the translation of English culture-loaded words.Secondly, translation strategies are summarized through analysis of cultural elements in the source text and response of target readers. At last, the thesis gives advice to translators about dealing with different types of English culture-loaded words under the guidance of these strategies.Different translation methods have been used in the translation of English culture-loaded words, including literal translation, free translation, replacement, contextual amplification and annotation. This thesis categorizes the methods and gave relatively detailed analysis so as to find a balance between the source text and the target readers in the translation. This thesis focuses on the translation of the English culture-loaded words, makes a summary of the translation methods under the guidance of foreignization and domestication theories, and provides suggestions for further translation of English culture-loaded words.
