Under the background of increasingly frequent communication between China and the rest of the world, the demands for interpreters keep growing. The market not only needs a numbers of interpreters, but also pays more attention to their ability. So interpreters need to constantly study translation methods and techniques to sum up some rules to follow on the basis of interpreting practice, so as to improve their interpreting competence.Based on the author's E-C interpreting of a simulated academic speech titled “Translation and Identity”, the report tries to analyze the application of “shift” in interpreting. The report includes four chapters. The first chapter introduces the background, content and purpose of project as well as current studies on translation shifts in translation and interpretation, focusing on that in interpretation. The third chapter is the core content of this report. It analyzes the author's application of “shift” at the lexical and syntactic levels as well as shift of perspectives by categorizing the examples. Finally, the author summarizes the conditions for an interpreter to apply shift in translation or interpreting. It is expected to provide experience for the author and other interpreters in future interpreting practice.
