In recent years, the number of studies concerning fuzzy language has increased a lot. However, most of these studies focused on the theoretical aspect rather than the area of practice. Fuzzy language is considered as a kind of diplomatic tactic, which is widely used in diplomatic discourse. The politeness and effectiveness of language can be improved through the skillful use of fuzzy language on diplomatic occasions. Hence, it is of great importance to study fuzzy language interpreting in diplomatic discourse. On the basis of Skopos theory, this thesis mainly studies the pragmatic functions and interpreting strategies of fuzziness in diplomatic discourse by the non-participant method. The major finding is that fuzzy language in diplomatic discourse can realize the goals of using language politely, self-protecting, withholding information deliberately and using language concisely and accurately. Besides, realizing corresponding skopos is the primary task of interpreting activities. Therefore, it is the purpose of diplomatic interpreting that determines the strategies of interpreting. The author hopes that this research can provide a new thought for the analysis and processing of fuzzy information in diplomatic discourse and give some help to further studies concerning fuzzy language interpreting.
