A Practice Report On C-E Interpreting Of Fuzzy Expressions On Diplomatic Occasions: Problems And Solutions

On diplomatic occasions,to obviate conflicts and maintain friendly relationship with countries,spokesmen of governments constantly utilizefuzzy expressions to make statements more tactful,subtle and flexible.The fuzziness of statements inevitably leads to the interpretation of fuzzy expressions.To retain or discard fuzziness when interpreting has enormous impacts on communication effects and even on diplomatic relations.Based on the author's interpreting assignments during her internship at Foreign Affairs Office(FAO)of Shaanxi People's Government,this practice report employs the functionalist Skopos theory to analyze the problems caused by fuzzy expressions which can be classified into five categories—fuzziness caused by hedges,deixes,fuzzy words,negative structures and figures of speech.Besides,the solutions are proposed under the guidance of Skopos theory—the strategies “fuzziness to fuzziness” and “fuzziness to accuracy” at macro perspective,and the tactics literal interpretation,addition,simplification,paraphrase and restructuring at micro perspective.The author practiced the solutions in her second interpreting assignment and successfully improved the interpreting quality,which verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of the solutions.
