A Study Of Diplomatic Interpreting From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In recent years,with the frequent exchanges between countries,interpreting has become an indispensable tool for information exchange between governments.Diplomatic interpreting,as a translation act that helps overcome language barriers and promote exchanges during the course of diplomatic activities,plays an important role in promoting relations between countries,achieving exchanges,cooperation and development.Therefore,quality of diplomatic interpreting also determines whether diplomatic activities can be carried out smoothly,so diplomatic interpreting has become the focus of research in recent years.Skopos Theory opens up another perspective for the study of diplomatic interpreting.According to Skopos Theory,translation is a purposeful act,and the purpose of translation determines the translation result.The main purpose of diplomatic interpreting is to accurately convey the information to be delivered by the speaker to the audience,so as to promote the exchange between the two parties and achieve the purpose of exchange.This thesis uses a qualitative analysis to make a case study of the 2017-2019 Li Keqiang's press conferences interpreting,and uses the three rules of Skopos Theory to analyze diplomatic interpreting of Li Keqiang's press conferences,and it also analyzes the translation methods used in the interpreting.Through analysis of related cases,it is found that: first,the three rules of Skopos Theory are feasible in Li Keqiang's press conference interpreting.Due to the preciseness,political and sensitive characteristics of diplomatic interpreting,as well as the language characteristics of the spokesman,the interpreter must accurately understand the true intention and substance of the speaker's speech to effectively achieve the purpose of communication.Second,in the diplomatic interpreting,translation methods such as amplification,omission,conversion can be used.In order to achieve diplomatic purpose,proper interpretation,addition,deletion,and even rewriting of the original text are necessary and reasonable.Third,diplomatic interpreting is affected by many factors,such as the quality of the interpreter.It provides a reference for related research and practice,in the hope that diplomatic interpreting research can attract more researchers' attention in the future.
