Semantic Absence In Liaison Interpreting And Corresponding Strategies—Interpretation Practice Report On 2015 Seminar Of Administrative Management For Local Government Official Of Latin American,Caribbean And South Pacific Region

As the communication between China and other countries is becoming frequent and ties in economy and commerce of all levels are being strengthened,interpreting activities are gaining more and more public attention.As one of the earliest forms of interpreting activities,liaison interpreting is widely used in diplomatic meeting,business negotiation,guest escorting,visiting and other fields.Liaison interpreting covers a wide range and scenes,asking for a high requirement for interpreter's language ability,cross-cultural communication ability and responding ability,as well as encyclopedic knowledge.This is a Chinese-to-English interpretation practice report,which describes liaison interpreting experiences in a seminar on administrative management for local government official of Latin American,Caribbean and South Pacific Region from June,22 nd,2015 to July,12 th,2015,hosted by Dalian Administration College.This report introduces four representative interpreting scenes during the interpreting practice and gives a conclusion and introspection to this interpreting practice after finishing the task.Semantic absence is the main obstacle in this liaison interpreting practice.After analysis and summary,the causes of semantic absence are commonly embodied in the differences on language,cultural and recognition,and aesthetic function between Chinese and English.From the perspective of Translation Variation Theory,this interpretation report explores the application of Translation Variation Theory in solving semantic absence in liaison interpreting,based on parts of Chinese-to-English consecutive interpreting transcripts.This report also puts forward corresponding interpreting strategies,hoping that this interpretation report can give a good example for the research and teaching of liaison interpreting,and provide some guidance and reference for interpreting practice.
