The book, The Chinese in Britain, 1800--present: Economy, Transnationalism and Identity, is one of the Palgrave Macmillan transnational history series, which is co-authored by Gregor Benton and Edmund Terence Gomez. The authors have carried out an interdisciplinary research on the 200-year history of Chinese in Britain from multi-angles, and apply analytical methods of anthropology, politics, ethnology, as well as international relations to explain the complexity and diversity of Chinese in Britain. It is a concentrated reflection in the field of overseas Chinese. So far, there exists no Chinese version of this book.This report consists of a translation practice and a translation report. The translation practice is an English-Chinese translation of the book’s fifth chapter, while the translation report is an analysis and summary of the translation practice. The translation report is divided into four parts. In the first part, the author describes the translation task, translation background, and translation process. The second part includes a process description, translation difficulties, and translation guidance. The third part is the core of the report, which illustrates how to adopt relevant translation skills to solve the problems emerging in the translation process from the perspective of word and sentence. Lexical skills are listed as conversion, supplement and concretion. Syntactical translation skills contain linear translation, segmentation and adjustment. The last part is a reflection of the translation.The translation practice is guided by Katharina Reiss’ theory on text type,while the translation report makes a detailed analysis of the difficulties met in the translation process and the employed translation skills. In this informative history text, the translator finds out, as English depicts the history events in line with its temporal and developmental sequences which is similar to Chinese expression habit, that linear translation is the most frequently-used skill.
