The original text of this translation report is selected from Electric and Hybrid Cars:A History co-edited by Curtis D.Anderson and Judy Anderson. The translator chooses Introduction:the Birth of the Automobile Industry as the original text, which mainly describes the development from electric and hybrid vehicles in the late 19 th century to fuel cell and plug-in vehicles in present age.The translation of original text is of help to readers in understanding the relevant history of automobile, and also provides the reference significance for the development of modern vehicle industry. This report explores the difficulties such as proper nouns and complex sentences encountered in the process of translation and, guided by Peter Newmark's Text Type Theory, proposes appropriate translation strategies and methods to solve these difficulties. The translation report comprises four chapters: the introduction of the translation project, the description of the translation process, the difficulties and methods of translation and the summary of the project. The first chapter briefly introduces the translation project, including its background, objective, significance and the structure of report;the second chapter describes the translation process, including the preparation before translation, the design of translation process and the modification after translation;the third chapter lists the difficulties and gives the case analysis from the perspective of lexical and complex sentence's translation;the last chapter summarizes the translation results and limitations.According to Newmark's Text Type Theory, the original is an informative text. The core of this type of text is the “authenticity” of the content,so the strategy of communicative translation should be adopted in translation to center on the readers. Then through an in-depth analysis of examples, the report introduces multiple translation methods such as reversion, addition and transliteration used to deal with translation difficulties.By taking the cultural backgrounds, reading habits and expressing habits of target readers into consideration, the translator strives to achieve the best communication effect.
