A Report On The Translation Of An Excerpt From Luxury:a Rich History

The book “Luxury: A Rich History” by Peter Mc Neil and Giorgio Riello tells the story of the development of luxury,and this report is an analysis and summary of the book.The reporter takes the first and second chapters of the book as cases.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s Text Type Theory,it summarizes the characteristics of historical texts,analyzes the difficulties in the translation process as well as the translation methods,and summarizes the translation experience.This report consists of five parts.First,the report explains the source and significance of the translation task,and introduces the task text.Secondly,it explains the translation process,including the preparation,translation and review.Thirdly,it summarizes the research status of the translation of historical texts,briefly introduces Newmark’s Text Type Theory and analyzes the feasibility of using Text Type Theory in this translation practice.Fourthly,it analyzes the difficulties in translation from three levels and explores solutions.The first level is the vocabulary level,which discusses three difficult points: specialized vocabulary,compound adjectives and foreign words;the second is the sentence level,which discusses how to deal with long and difficult sentences and passive sentences;the third is the discourse level,which discusses the cohesion and coherence of the discourse.Finally,it summarizes the gains during the translation and also the shortcomings.Through this translation practice,the reporter has had a better understanding of the characteristics of historical texts and the application of Newmark’s Text Type Theory.The reporter expects this translation practice to gain experience in translating relevant texts in the future and provide some references for relevant translation practice.
