For foreign students from both Chinese character cultural circles and non-Chinese character circles, learning Chinese characters is a major difficulty.Among the three difficulties of recognizing, reading and writing Chinese characters, which have been widely acknowledged, the difficulty in writing stands out.In fact, for Chinese students in their first primary school year, learning to write Chinese characters is not an easy task. This paper attempts to describe and summarize the Chinese character writing situation of foreign Chinese learning beginners and first-year primary school Chinese students, compare the commonalities and differences in their acquisition of Chinese character writing, and compare the differences in the learning processes and learning methods used and accepted in learning Chinese characters. Through these comparisons, this paper endeavors to refer to the experience of teaching Chinese characters as a mother tongue to improve the efficiency of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners. This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the purpose and significance of this study, relevant literature, the research object and its source, and perspectives for analysis and research ideas. The second chapter specifically describes the foreign students' acquisition of Chinese character writing from two aspects, namely, the stroke and the structure of Chinese characters. The students' Chinese handwriting materials are collected for analysis and their errors made in writing are summarized. The errors are classified into strokes errors, component errors and full character errors, and each of the three types of errors are characterized by smaller classes. This paper presents examples for each classified error type, and the causes of foreign students making such errors are alsodiscussed. The third chapter introduces the Chinese elementary students' Chinese handwriting acquisition, categorizes the Chinese characters where they most frequently make mistakes in writing, and analyzes the causes of the mistakes. The fourth chapter comparatively analyzes the Chinese handwriting acquisition of foreign students and Chinese elementary students, finding that generally elementary Chinese students write Chinese characters better than foreign students. But similarities also exist between the two. This paper then investigates the causes of such a situation from such perspectives as learning tasks, teaching methods and learning methods, and presents implications from the comparative analyses on teaching Chinese to foreigners. This paper concludes by reviewing and summarizing the findings of the study and a small discussion on further thoughts and shortcomings of this paper.
