The "Mandarin fever" around the world has attracted a large number of foreign students to study Chinese,which has made the Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL)developed rapidly.As the basic part of TCFL,Chinese character teaching cannot be ignored.However,there is a big different between Chinese character and English character.Therefore,European and American students are faced with great difficulties when they learn Chinese characters,especially the primary level of European and American students.So,in order to solve this situation,the author has made a questionnaire with 25 questions of the present situation of Chinese character teachi ng,and the results from 50 interviewees? shows the main problems of Chinese character teaching are: Chinese character teaching is subordinate to TCFL and the lessons of Chinese character teaching lack of systematicness and pertinence.The main reasons for these problems are from the factors of Chinese characters ?learners factors and the factors of teaching methods.After understanding the cause that made Chinese character difficult to learn,based on the previous research achievements,there are three inn ovative and practical teaching strategies are proposed,which are combination of Chinese characters and English characters helping European and American students learning Chinese characters?use multimedia technology to assist students learning ?improve the enjoyment during the class to assist teacher teaching Chinese characters.The author hopes that the teachers can adopt the teaching strategies in the real class,in order to improve the poor situation of Chinese characters teaching in the primary stage.
