With the development of science and technology, the international exchange and cooperation become closer. Therefore, the translation of English for science and technology(EST) is worth studying. Medical translation is playing an important role in the medical field around the world. The quality of EST translation has a major effect on how readers understand the text. The translation of this article has a large amount of obscurity, which would hinder effectiveness of scientific information, so it is important to achieve functional equivalence between source text and target text in medical EST.Combined with the features of medical EST, the report chooses Consequences of Gestational Diabetes in an Urban Hospital in Viet Nam: A Prospective Cohort Study as the research object to show the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory to EST.The functional equivalence theory actually includes information equivalence and effect equivalence two aspects. In the translation of medical EST, information equivalence means effect equivalence, so the information equivalence strategy is adopted. In terms of vocabulary, there are a number of professional terms especially abbreviations, so it's necessary to convey the information related to Gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM). In terms of syntax, the translator has paid attention to the change of the structure to deliver the information of criterion and results about GDM in order to achieve the syntax equivalence. From the perspective of the functional equivalence theory, this report transfers the messages of GDM terms, its research methods, results to the readers by using the strategy of information equivalence. In terms of the value of this report, on the one hand, this report would be of help to improve the translation quality of medical EST; on the other hand, it will hopefully shed lights on the practice and research of medical EST translation.
