With the development of science and the introduction of technology, scientific translation is becoming a trend, which then requires the related translation theory to guide the translation of scientific literature. However, the translation theories we are familiar with are produced for literary translation, like “Faithfulness, Expressiveness, Elegance” of Yan Fu and “Three Principles of Translation” of Alexander Fraser Tytler, focusing on the literary works. Peter Newark, a translator in Britain, proposed a translation theory, Communicative Translation, which addresses itself solely to the second reader and does not anticipate difficulties or obscurities, and would expect a generous transfer for foreign elements into his own culture as well as his language where necessary. What's more, Communicative Translation emphasizes the “forces” rather than the content of the message, which is good enough to guide the translation of scientific literature. Considering the features of scientific literature and Communicative Translation, this report aims to apply Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory as a guidance to translate scientific literature Did the giant Broken Hill(Australia) Zn-Pb-Ag deposit melt. This report consists of five parts. The first part introduces the background and significance of translation project; the second part refers to the translation task, including text content and text characteristics. The third part is the review of the whole translation process, which precisely illustrates the translation purpose, translation theory and difficult point and important point, laying a sound foundation on later transition. The fourth part, the main part of this report, refers to the case analysis. The last part is the summary to the translation practice.
