Translation Practice Report On Mars Rover "Curiosity" Project

Along with the advancement of science and technology and frequentcommunication between China and other countries in the world, scientificEnglish translation is play a more and more important role in promoting technicalcommunication among countries.As a practice report on English to Chinese Scientific English translation,this report describes a duration of about10months (from October15,2012toAugust20,2013) project of “Curiosity” Research Report writing conducted by agroup of7graduates and explores how to, in this efficiency-oriented andfast-paced society, accomplish a satisfactory special report by narrowing downsearch scope in vast amounts of resources for relevant materials and doing somenecessary translations after comprehensive consideration. Trying to work out anefficient approach has profound practical significance.The report firstly introduces the significance and development of scientificEnglish translation. It then goes on analyzing the materials of this translationproject and putting forward Translation Variation Theory as a guide with solutions.The project is entrusted by College of Mechanical Engineering of HunanUniversity. The initial background briefing introduces the development of Marsexploration highlighting the American Mars Rover “Curiosity”. To carry out theproject successfully, proper choosing of translators is necessary so as to finish iton accordance with the prescribed time and quality requirements.It is essential to get prepared before translating which includes taskallocation among team members, tools and parallel text as well as groupdiscussion. After we finish translation, cross-checking is used to guaranteequality and research report compiling is conducted. According to analysis oftranslation task, I puts forward problems confronted with in practice and comesup with corresponding solutions. They are as follows:1) choosing amongextremely large amounts of resources for materials needed under the guidance ofAbsorption;2) extracting information according to Selected Translation andparaphrasing Translation;3) improving target text forms according to AdaptionTranslation;4) satisfying reading habits according to Edited Translation;5)satisfying designated subject requirement according to Synthesizing Translation; and6) giving expression to research significance according to Narrative Review.It is hoped that this report can offer some referential value for further studyon translation—based research report writing and the operation of team project.
