A Translator’s Subjectivity As Displayed In The Translation Of Popular Science Works

In recent years, Chinese culture has been receiving much more attention than in the past. Body language as the most expressive non-communicative language form has also begun to be studied. In Body Language in China, the author uses his own perspective as a foreigner to analyze Chinese body language, and the target readers are Chinese, so the translation of this book must be seen from the perspective of Chinese culture, using Chinese expressions, to make it more easily accepted by Chinese readers.The translator’s subjectivity has emerged as an important topic in recent years. This approach has broken with tradition, which usually takes the source author as the center of the translation. According to this more recent approach, translators are the main part of translation. During the course of translation, the translators add their interpretation of the source text, as well as their personal emotions, which can make the translation closer to the target language.In this translation practice report, the translator’s subjectivity is considered as paramount in achieving a translation that is faithful to the original text as well as catering for the target text receiver’s reading habits. First of all, in the process of reading the source text, the translator needs to figure out the various meanings and intentions of the original author. Second, after reading the source text many times, the translator adds his/her own understanding using a large number of Chinese idioms to make the translation more easily accepted by the Chinese people. Finally, with translator’s subjectivity, the translation of words, sentences and texts in the process of the translation of Body Language in China is discussed, which is then combined with Chinese traditional cultural aspects. Some improper expressions have been corrected and the final translation is obtained after revisions. In this process of translation, the translator mainly uses translation methods of literal and free translation and recreation.
