Translation Of Popular Science Books From The Perspective Of Translator's Subjectivity

The types of texts have large varieties,and the translation strategies will be different according to different texts.This report takes the translation of a popular science book entitled The First Scientist-Anaximander and his legacy as an example,and discusses how the translator's subjectivity manifests itself and plays a positive role in translation activities.The author of this book is Carlo Rovelli,physicist in quantum physics.This work mainly tells the origin of scientific thought which involves various aspects like philosophy,religion,history and science.This book is a popular science book whose language is concise and precise and whose role is to popularize the knowledge.As a science popular book,this book presents scientific theories and the devolopement of the scientific thought by its beautiful language and shows the readers its literalness.The author inspires the readers to think deeply about the meaning of science in this book,which makes it idealogical.Therefore,the translator must not only guarantee the accuracy,but also reproduce the style,the literalness and the thought of the original text in the process of translation.This report has four chapters.The first chapter briefly presents the overview of translation tasks and background of the work:introduction of this book and the author,requests of editor and publishing house.The second chapter describes the four stages of translation.1.Preparation before translation:read and understand the original text,and collect related information.2.Selection of translation strategies:work out the translation strategies according to the theory of textual typology.3.Specific translation process:set up a holistic view of all the chapters and the whole text to give a better understsnding for the translation,translate the terms in the text by specific translating tools.4.Proofreading:have cooperative proofreading with the editor to solve the problems left in translation.The third chapter consists of detailed cases analysis from the point of view of the translator's subjectivity,discussing how the translator applies subjectivity during translation.This chapter consists of four parts:the first part is the theoretical foundation that presents the transformation of translator's role:from the servant and transparent glass to the subject of translation.The translator must demonstrate subjectivity and creativity in translation.The second part contains examples of historical fact checking.The translator must correct the errors in the original text that are inconsistent with objective facts.From the point of view of the translator's subjectivity,the third part presents the necessity to add annotations in translation,and summarizes four situations that require annotation:1.Names of unusual people or places.2.terms 3.Cultural context,such as historical facts or allusions.4.Obscures and difficults content which could set reading obstacles for readers.The fourth part includes the analyses of specific sentences,translators can be creative on the basis of respecting the original text when translating literary texts.The fourth chapter is the conclusion of the whole work,summarizing the problems encountered in the work and the translations that still need improvementFrom the perspective of translator's subjectivity,this report explores the manifestation of translator's subjectivity in the activity of translation,and the space and limit for translators to realize the subjectivity and creactivity.In conclusion,as the subject of translation,the translator plays a role of bridge that links the author and the readers.It is the same case in the translation of popular science books,the translator must firstly understand the knowledge,emotions and attitudes expressed by the author,then explain and represent them by various methods from the point of view of potential readers,to help them understand the original text.
