The Application Of Semantic And Communicative Translation To The Translation Of Novels

Novel is a typical form of literature. Entering into 21 st century, more and more English novels are imported into China, which not only colors people's life, but also widens their view. However, so far, there has been some blank for novel translation and a long way to go for research of novel translation. Therefore, it is meaningful and significant to continue the research of novel translation.Semantic translation and communicative translation are important parts of Newmark's translation theories. They are widely applied to the translation of practical writing. It is,however, also meaningful to employ semantic and communicative translation as the guidance of novel translation. Combined with the analysis of characteristics in languages and contents of novels, the application of semantic and communicative translation can help the translated versions more suitable for the reading habits of Chinese readers. It will also help the translated version attain more acceptance and favor among Chinese readers.The translation of Just between Us is taken as an example, in which, communicative translation will be specially utilized in the translation of the cultural elements in the book due to the need of cultural communications whereas semantic translation will be employed for language and dialogues due to the times and regional characteristics of these contents.This translation practice report, under the guidance of Newmark's semantic and communicative translation, on the basis of the translation of the first four chapters of Just between Us, is to conclude the problems encountered and analyze the typical cases. It is hoped that this report's author's translation ability can be strengthened and her ability of solving the problems during the translation process can be improved. It is also hoped that this report can provide some references for the future research of novel translation.
