Translating Satirical Language In Wang Shuo's Guo Ba Yin Jiu Si

This study seeks to explore the strategies of representing the satirical language in the English translation of Wang Shuo's Chinese novel Guo ba yin jiu si, which is translated as Die to Satisfaction. It seeks theoretic guidance from reception aesthetics.The study begins with a literature view of doing and studying literary translation in this light. Locating the satirical language characterized by individuation, visualization and popularization as contested by established scholarship, it seeks to represent the individuation of satirical language from tool translation and combination of literal translation and free translation. To represent visualization of satirical language in the novel, it resorts to compensation strategies and the unity of foreignization and domestication. To represent popularization of satirical language, it turns to amplification and transliteration. The study concludes that a successful delivery of the source text's style requires substantial knowledge of both the source language culture and target language culture. When it comes to deliver a satiric style of a novel illustrated by the aforementioned practice, the translator should always keep the readers on his or her mind for effective translation.
