Translation Of The Double-edged Helix

This report is based on the translation practice of the book The Double-edged Helix,authored by the American mathematics ecologists Liebe F.Cavalieri.The report comprises 4 parts.The first part introduces the background information of the English edition from which the translated Chinese version and the report come,and the main tasks to be fulfilled in this report.The second part accounts for the procedure of the translation,including the pre-translation preparation,process of the translation and proofreading.The third part deals with the translation of attributive clauses and the unfamiliar usage of familiar words by providing typical examples.In translating the attributive clause,the methods adopted are techniques of combination,techniques of division,translating into appositive and adverbial clauses.If the attributive clause is not long and the antecedent has no other modifiers,the combination techniques should first be considered;if the attributive clause is long and isn't closely related to the main cause,the division techniques should come first;if the attributive clause plays the role of appositive clause or adverbial clause,then it should be translated as the appositive or adverbial clauses.The other task of the report is to deal with the unfamiliar usage of the familiar word.When the common lexical meaning of the familiar word doesn't suit the context,then the author resorts to the dictionary or the Internet until the most suitable lexical meaning is found.Sometimes no existing Chinese translation of English words is available,then we should do the work creatively——think out proper Chinese terms according to the source and target contexts.The fourth part summarizes the ways of translating attributive clauses and the unfamiliar lexical meaning of familiar words.Expectation of further study is put forth.
