A Report On The Translation Of Terminology In Facebook's 2014 Annual Report On Form 10-k

The original text of this translation task is 2014 Facebook's Annual Report on Form 10-K posted on SEC.Its language is plain,rigorous,concise and practical.A large number of terminologies can be found in this annual report involving multiple areas including finance,internet,law,politics,etc.,translation of which is the main difficulty and focus of this report.The translation of this annual report is based on Catford's translation theory,which argues that the core of translation lies in finding equivalents,namely,the original language and the target language have the same function and meaning.According to this translation theory,terminology translation should achieve equivalence in order to effectively deliver information in the annual report.This paper adopts case study as the research method,enumerating typical terminologies in the annual report,summarizing their characteristics and exploring translation methods and strategies.The terminologies in this annual report are sorted out into four categories:internet terminologies,financial terminologies,legal terminologies and political terminologies,the characteristics of which are also summarized in this report.Summarizing the characteristics of these terminologies,the author concludes four translation methods,which are transliteration,free translation,blending of transliteration and liberal translation and zero translation,achieving faithful,authentic and consistent translation.Terminology is an important information carrier in annual report,whose readability will be affected if the translation of the terminologies cannot achieve fidelity,authenticity and consistency.With the constant changes in economic and political situation,a large number of new terminologies will continue to bring out,which poses challenge for their translation.Therefore,it is of highly significance to study the translation of terminologies in annual report and to explore new methods of terminology translation under the new economic circumstances.
