A Study On Electrical Engineering English Translation Based On Skopos Theory

The international community is closely related in the field of science and technology at the present under the background of globalization and informationization.The specialty of Electrical Engineering and its Automation,exudes its new vitality under the impact of the international exchange as well.In such a case,a large number of inter-disciplinary talents who are expert at Electrical Engineering and its Automation and translation are greatly needed.And according to College English Teaching Syllabus,it is necessary to foster interdisciplinary talents.As a branch of English for Science and Technology(EST),Electrical Engineering English(EEE)translation,which must be accurate and rigorous,requires its professionals good at the specialized English.However,it is found that there have been seldom articles in the field of systematic translation theories applied to EEE translation on CNKI;instead,there are only articles on specific translation methods.It is common that EST translation is studied from the perspective of German functional translation theory;however,as a branch of EST,the Skoposn theory is rarely used in the EEE to guide its translation.So the innovation of this thesis is that the EEE translation is thoroughly studied based on Skopos theory.In this thesis,words,sentences and textparagraphs are selected from Electrical Engineering English textbooks,translation textbooks,and articles and journals home and abroad such as The Practical Textbook for Electrical Engineering English by Tsinghua University Press and Power Electronics and Energy Conversion Systems by John Wiley & Sons and the Skopos theory is employed in their English to Chinese translation,and then,clear translation strategies and corresponding translation methods are provided.It is hoped that this thesis be helpful to the spread of electrical engineering technology and the development of science and technology in China.According to Vermeer,a translator should take the purpose of translation and the target readers' need into consideration during translation,so a good EEE translation should suits the three rules of Skopos theory.According to Reiss' s text types' theory,EEE is the informative text and therefore,its pragmatic function is underlined in terms of communication.The Skopos theory is quite suitable to EEE translation and it is meaningful to study the translation strategies and translation methods of EEE from the perspective of functional translation theory.The background of German functional translation school is briefly reviewed,and Vermeer's Skopos theory is detailed discussed,especially the three rules: the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.In this paper,the author begins with the analysis of the characteristics of EEE and provide proper translation strategies and methods for EEE translation based on Vermeer's Skopos theory,such as documentary translation and instrumental translation and translation strategies.The author intends that this paper will play a positive role in guiding the EEE translation.
