E-c Translation Of Cohesive Devices In Papers Of Science And Technology

English papers of science and technology are characterized by coherence,conciseness and precision in the context.To achieve coherence,various cohesive devices are used.How to convey the meanings of various cohesive devices indicated in E-C translation poses difficulties in translation.In this paper,comparisons are made between the cohesive features of Chinese and English in terms of reference,substitution and conjunction.It is concluded that more cohesive devices are used in English than in Chinese since English is hypotactic while Chinese is paratactic.English focuses on form while Chinese focuses on meaning,So where cohesive devices are used in English,signifiers might be omitted or repeated in Chinese.To achieve coherence of the text,different categories of cohesive devices are used in English and Chinese respectively,making it impossible to achieve full equivalence between both languages.With Examples extracted from two research articles published in Nature and their translations,this paper focuses on E-C translation methods of cohesive devices.In terms of reference and substitution,omission or repetition of the cohesive parts can ensure a coherent translation.In terms of conjunction,translators should not only choose proper Chinese conjunction words according to the meaning of the original,but also make clear the logical relations of non-finite clauses.In summary,to ensure a coherent translation,translators should figure out the logical meanings that are implicit in specific contexts and make these meanings explicit.
