Variation Of Visual Images

David Hockney is one of the most influential contemporary artists in the UK.His artistic creation involves painting,photography,photo collage,stage design,video device,digital media creation and so on.For decades,adhering to keeping pace with the times,he is still active in the international art scene.The photo collage series was an art experiment conducted by Horkney for breaking the bottleneck of personal painting during 1982 to 1986.Although the time was not long,it was of great significance to Hockney's self-breakthrough on the bottleneck of painting.Taking Hockney's photo collage works as studying object,this paper starts with its background origin and combines Hockey' s personal creation and the overall perspective of his era for the research.Hockey's photo collage creation is based on photographic images,but still in the traditional structure of the European realist painting,while absorbing the nutrition of multiplex art since the emerging of 1960 s pop art.It has reflected the artist's differentiation and integration between painting and photography under the impact of the image era.Hockney's photo collage is also peculiar in the history of collage art.It is to show the huamn eye to watch things as the main purpose,with a concept of“photography against photography”.By using the way of “collage”,Hockney makes the photos taken mechanically into photo collage,which shows the effect of viewing through human eyes.This paper compares Hockney's photo collage with the photo in visual presentation,and analyzes and interprets Hockney's photo collage from perspective of formal language.Besides,it points out that,through the experiment of photo collage,Hockney not only obtained the freedom of viewing and portraying representational things,but also set up a new direction for the development of contemporary representational painting.
