In the era of globalization,more and more academic exchanges among different countries occur.The translation of academic texts is important for disseminating the research achievements and advance further exchanges.As it is known that one obvious characteristic of academic text is usually considered impersonal and objective.According to Systematic Functional Linguistics,however,every language stands for interpersonal meaning and expresses attitude,and academic texts are the same.Therefore,during the academic text translation,focusing much on the objectivity and preciseness in the source text may make translators neglect the attitude expressed by the author.It is necessary to find a new way to define the interpersonal meaning translation in academic text.Recently,appraisal theory is a new focus of Systemic Functional Linguistics,and it was put forward by J.Martin and White in the late 1990s as the expansion of interpersonal function of Systemic Functional Linguistics.Appraisal Theory describes the evaluation and interpersonal functions of language and supplies an integral model to analyze appraisal resources from three aspects:attitudinal expressions,sources of evaluation,and writer 's positioning of those other sources.The three aspects are named as "attitude","engagement",and "graduation" respectively.Based on a translation practice of academic text Coming back to Voice the author participated in and guided by Appraisal Theory,this report presents that translators could examine whether the appraisal meaning in the source text is fully and accurately presented by their translation or not by analyzing the similarities and differences in appraisal resources between Source Text and Target Text.This report provides translators a new way to review the translation and enriches the application of appraisal theory.The report is divided into five parts.In Introduction,the author introduced the translation task and the original text.Meanwhile,the author pointed out the significance of this report.In Chapter one,the author introduced translation process which including the preparation,mid-translation and after translation in details.In Chapter two,the appraisal theory,as the guiding theory of the whole report,was described systematically containing the background and the exact content,etc...In Chapter three,the data analyzing and case study were introduced.In this chapter,the author marked and accounted the appraisal resources in the original and translation texts.After comparing and analyzing the two groups of data,the author shows the differences in the two texts with exact examples.The last chapter is Conclusion,and then the author summarized the findings and disadvantages about this report in this chapter.
