The paper is on the conjunction ‘buran’,aiming to create a history-based analysis from the origins,combining variations to grammaticalization.Combined with the various ‘buran’ variants in modern Chinese,they are placed on a synchronic level and compared with ‘buran’ in the semantic and pragmatic level.This paper is divided into five parts.The first chapter details the purpose and significance of the research.This part also analyses the current situation and existing problems.Meanwhile,the content,basic research,theoretical methods and corpus source are analyzed.The second chapter mainly analyses four kinds of usage of ‘buran’ in modern Chinese from syntax and semantics aspects: hypothesis meaning,selective meaning,suggestion meaning and waking meaning.The frequent usage of those words from high to low is: Hypothesis meaning> Selective meaning> Waking meaning>Suggestion meaning.The third chapter is based on the respective development paths of ‘bu’ and ‘ran’in ancient Chinese,explores the process by which the two words are connected together to form the word ‘buran’ into the word.So as to analyze the grammaticalization course of ‘buran’ changing from substantive to function word.On the motivation and mechanism of grammaticalization,motivation mainly starts withthree aspects: economic principle,syntactic position and semantic virtualization.The mechanism is analyzed from the perspective of reanalysis,contextual absorption and synonymy superimposition.The fourth chapter mainly discussed through the ‘buran’ one by one with the relevant variants of the comparative analysis,to study the ‘buran’ and the different characteristics of these forms in terms of semantics and pragmatics.The last chapter is the conclusion of the innovation and inadequacies.
