A Report On The Subtitle Translation Of The Documentary Loess Plateau

Out of the eight episodes of Loess Plateau, the author translated three, which are Off the City Fortress, Loess Song Soul and the Wonderful works of Gansu, and it is also the base of this translation project report. The thesis consists of six parts:project introduction, preparation, translation theories, translation strategies and methods, translation summary and the original and target texts. The chapter of translation strategies and methods is the longest one in this thesis because there are so many case analyses to verify the translation theories. Because the subtitle translation is constrained by time and space, to be faithful and smooth is the first principle that obeyed by the translator, and the author also simplified the translation as possible as she can, and analyzed such translation methods as literal translation, paraphrase, and ellipsis in different contexts. The whole process of translation, a glossary about some official titles and the lyric translation of five folk songs are included in the thesis, and the author analyzed and concluded the translation strategies and methods of folk songs, which would be helpful to the future researchers. The translation of English to Chinese is always the mainstream of the domestic translation circle. Then by this thesis, the author expects that more translators would pay their attentions to the subtitle translation to prompt the Chinese culture to rise on the world stage.
