An Analysis Of The Language Describing Characters' Psychological Activities Translation Practice Report

Biography is defined as a detailed description of a person's life story,including a figure's remarkable images,unique ideas,individual experiences and vivid personalities.Different kinds of writing methods can be adopted to compose the work. This practice report is based on the first and representative chapter of the biography. Not a game: the incredible rise and unthinkable fall of Allen Iverson was written by American famous writer--Kent Babb. The description of Iverson's events reflects the ups and downs of Iverson's life,which gives readers some educational meanings. The author is good at using some language describing characters' mental activities in order to build up the characters' personality. Such language is always difficult in translation. So in order to translate it well and keep the biography faithful and vigorous, the translator tries to use the appropriate expressions to achieve the equivalence of word, rhetorical device and sentence. Then the target readers will have the same feelings as the original readers,which is exactly the focus of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory. Therefore, some translation methods, under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, are used in this report to analyze the translation of the language describing characters' mental activities.This practice report is divided into three parts.The first part is introduction, which introduces the translation task, the developing course of biography literature, the current status and the realistic meanings of the book.The second part is the main body. It is composed of three chapters.Chapter One provides a brief description of the author, content, background,language features about mental description as well as a brief introduction to Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory.Chapter Two is the introduction of translation process, including the task preparation, the process of translation and post-task review.Chapter Three is the case analysis, covering the solving the translation of the language describing characters' mental activities by using free translation, conversion skill, the application of Chinese four-character words and readjustment of word order.The last part is conclusion, which sums up the whole translation process and drawbacks in the translation practice. The translator draws lessons from the translation of the language describing characters' mental activities. It will provide meaningful guidance for later researchers.
