In recent years,with the improvement of China's international status,China's influence on international politics, economy and culture have gradually increased.Meanwhile, Chinese culture is becoming more and more popular. As the most widely used language in the world, Chinese has attracted an increasing number of people.Accordingly,the main task of teaching is to cultivate students' language communicative competence. In addition to the basic pronunciation, vocabulary, sentences,and grammar,cultural teaching can not be ignored during the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Not only should the students learn Chinese well ,but also understand Chinese culture.In daily life, plants are closely related with our life, for which the unique cultural connotation of the plants have become an important part of Chinese teaching. The cultural connotation of Chinese plant words embodies the unique national culture of China, and that not present in the other national cultures. This also brings some difficulties for foreign students in learning and understanding Chinese. In this paper, the cultural connotations of plant words in Chinese are explained in detail and compared with that of English plants words. And finally the causes of their differences are analyzed.This paper is divided into six parts:The introduction briefly summarizes the reason and significance of the topic, the research status and methods, the innovation of the thesis, and so on. Some representative plant words in Chinese and English are introduced in chapter one, and then their cultural connotations are contrasted. The reasons of differences between plant words of Chinese and English are analyzed in chapter two. In chapter three, the students of the Western European cultural circle are selected to ask questions about their understanding and application of Chinese plant words, which is analyzed afterwards. In chapter four, the necessity of mastering the cultural connotations of plant words are introduced. The corresponding teaching suggestions are given to improve the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. Finally,the fifth part is conclusion, it is pointed out that the deficiencies and the direction of further research in this paper.In this paper,through the cultural contrast of Chinese and English plant words,more clearly show that different nationalities have different values and aesthetic,more emphatically shows the abundant cultural connotation of Chinese cultural words. I hope the students can learn more about the extensive and profound Chinese culture,at the same time improve the students' intercultural communicative competence. I hope this will help in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
