Report On Subtitle Translation Of The Documentary Qiang Ethnic Culture Near The River Min

With the development of the world,intercultural exchanges are becoming more and more frequent.The documentary,as a culture carrier,plays a very important role in exchanges between different cultures.But for foreigners who want to know China better,language is always a big challenge when watching Chinese documentaries.To make these documents easier to understand,the subtitles must be translated into foreign languages.But the translation of subtitles attracts very little attention in China,especially for the subtitle translation of documentaries from Chinese into French.As a result,the quality of the translation is spotty and Francophone viewers cannot fully understand the documentary.Based on the skopos theory,this report attempts to make an in-depth study on the translation of the subtitles of the documentary Culture of the Qiang ethnic group near the River Min and tries to bring new ideas to promote studies on translation of subtitles of documentaries in China.According to the skopotheory,it is necessary to establish a "brief" as the guideline for the translation.This program is launched by CCTV-4,its intention is to promote Chinese culture.And targeted recipients are French speakers who aim to have more knowledge about China and its exotic culture.Therefore,the intended purpose(skopos)is to carry out intercultural exchanges between different cultures.Skopos is the paramount rule in translation,and it decides the choice of strategies and methods of the translation.It should also be noted that the text of the documentary subtitles has its own specialties.First,since it is a documentary about the Qiang ethnic,which is also part of Chinese culture,the content of the text is full of exotic elements of Qiang ethnic and China.Then,the text is composed by interviews and comments;there is a big difference between their styles.In addition,subtitles are only part of the documentary;there are still images and voices that also favor the understanding of the spectators.Meanwhile they limit the translation of subtitles in time and space.Thus,if one wants to achieve the intended goal,one must not only transform the oral language into written language,but also translate Chinese culture into French culture.Here are the two biggest challenges for the translator.Given the three principles in skopos theory,namely those of skopos,intertextual coherence and intratextual coherence,the report establishes three specific principles for the translation of the subtitles of the documentary.First,the translated text must be brief and clear because of the limitations of time and space.Second,it must be readable and coherent for viewers.Lately,it is also necessary to keep the exotic information that is essential in the culture of departure.With the help of these three principles,the translator can choose the most appropriate methods in translation by taking advantage of the target language.Thus,the skopos of the translation can be realized.
