Report On The English Translation Of The Documentary Subtitles Of Hexi Corridor (Excerpt)

The documentary is a TV art form that reproduces true stories in an artistic way,which provokes people's thought by truth.People can get a clear and visual knowledge about many events and phenomena through documentary,wherein the historic and humanistic documentary is a good way of approaching the history.At present,with the rapid development of China in every aspect and the implementation of the “Belt and Road” Initiative,the world is paying more attention to China,where there is no lack of abundant and meaningful Chinese history and culture.In this sense,the English translation of the historic and humanistic documentary subtitles in China can help international friends to gain a clearer understanding about Chinese history and culture visually and it plays a more important role in spreading Chinese culture to the outside world.The author completes this translation report based on her English translation of the subtitles in Pathway,the second episode and The Silk Road,the sixth episode of a historic and humanistic documentary Hexi Corridor.This report describes the task in detail from the following three aspects: task description,process description and case analysis.Firstly,in the part of task description,the author analyzes the task background,target readers and significance of the task;in the part of process description,the author introduces the pre-translation and quality control;and in the part of case analysis,which is the core of the report,considering the characteristics of documentary language and needs of the target readers,the author analyzes appropriate translation strategies corresponding to different translation difficulties under the guidance of Skopos Theory,including translation difficulties of proper nouns and four-character words,paratactic sentences and closed syntactic structure,as well as allusions and quotations from ancient China.Lastly,the author draws a conclusion including the significance and limitation of this report as well as what the author gains from the translation.The author wishes that this report can make some contributions to the aid of international friends in their better understanding of Chinese history and culture as well as to the publicity and even the implementation of the “Belt and Road” Initiative,and it will be able to shed some light on the translation of documentary subtitles in the future.From this translation report the author gains at least the following three aspects of implication: firstly,the author gets a deeper and more detailed understanding about the history and culture of Hexi Corridor,feeling the glorious achievements that our ancestors had made as well as our splendid history and culture;secondly,the author has learned a number of translation skills,which will contribute to the further improvement of her translating level in the future;and thirdly,the author realizes that strict proofreading is indispensable in the translatingpractice as well as in the writing of the report,because it not only relates to the quality of the target text and the report but it also reflects the attitude of the author.
