A Report On The Translation Of Subtitles In Biographical Documentary

With the advent of the information age and more and more cultural communication between China and Western Countries,a considerable number of Western films and television programs are pouring into China.Meanwhile Chinese audience get the opportunity to understand western culture,it also provides a new way to learn English.Nowadays the community demand of dubbed film constantly increasing,and the subtitle translation is also need to be studied.Documentary,a film or television art to provoke our thoughts,aims to show the truth and reality.The translation of biographical documentary is a kind of movie subtitle translation,owning the properties of time and space limitations,unity and harmony of text and pictures.The subtitle text consists of two parts: narration and human voice,each possessing unique styles.We should take different characteristics of documentaries as well as different communication modes into consideration.This thesis,based on the author's translation practice of Discovering Dali,proposes some translation methods such as subtitle simplification principle,sentence reconstruction and subtitle integrity.Eventually,the documentaries can be successfully understood and accepted by the target audience and whereby the purpose of intercultural communication is accomplished.
