Against the backdrop of increasing cultural communication between China and Western countries as well as the development of internet media, the cultural exchange role of documentaries has become more and more prominent. Thus researches on the subtitle translation of documentaries are getting deeper and deeper.Based on a case study of subtitle translation of two documentaries, this translation report aims to explore the ways to achieve the simplicity of subtitle translation under the guidance of the Skopos Theory. In view of the major features of the language of subtitle like colloquialism and popularization, and the requirements for accuracy and simplicity of subtitle translation,as well as its space and time limitations, the author summarizes several methods(reduction of information, appropriate expansion, replacement and rewriting,four-character phrases)that are applicable in achieving the simplicity of subtitle translation based on the experiences and specific translation examples. These four methods help to make the translation simpler.Reduction of information and four-character structure are two most practical and effective methods to achieve the simplicity of the translation, thus are two prime translation methods. In the process of translation, the author gave full consideration to both the translator and the audience, and tried to achieve the communicative goal and to make the translation simple and coherent enough to meet the needs of the audience. The author hopes that this thesis can be helpful to those who will carry on studies on subtitle translation.
