This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of Foreign Soil. The book was published by the Hachette Austria in May,2014 and written by Maxine Beneba Clark who is a famous Australian writer of literary works for youth. There are ten short stories in this book, and the first three chapters were analyzed, including David,Harlem Jones and Hope. Each story in these chapters calls on the voices that are often pushed to the fringes of society, such as the problems of immigrants, refugees and racial discrimination through the description of characters and their inner thoughts.Meanwhile, the book Foreign Soil also plays an important role in the mental development of teenagers.Except introducing the background and significance of the translation, the report mainly introduces the difficulties and methods of translation in Chapter four.In the practice, the difficulties focus on lexical and syntactic levels, including many vulgar expressions and proper nouns, the translation of attributive clause and short sentences and translation issues such as how to make the translation smooth on the basis of keeping the writing style of original book. Thus, various translation methods are used to deal with these challenges, such as annotated transliteration and replacement in lexical translation, semantic explication, addition and combination in syntactic translation,so as to make the translation retain faithfulness to the source text and conform to the Chinese expression habit. From this practice, the author has gained a strong understanding of the translation of the Children literary works.Besides, the author also makes a summary to the shortcomings and challenges in this practice, with a purpose of improving the translation skills in the future translation practice, dealing with the problems in the practice and providing some references for those who meet the same problems in the future.
