Translation Practice Report On Specification Of Scientific Patents

With the development of science and technology,the communication among different countries becomes increasingly important.Good translation of scientific patent's specification plays an essential role in introducing academic achievements abroad,and promoting academic communication.The author was entrusted by Tianjin Arkmid company to translate the specifications of scientific patents in the fields of machinery,electrochemistry,physics,and aeronautics,etc.into Chinese.Based on the translation practice,the present report is finished.Specification of scientific patent is a kind of accurate and simple written material describing product's name,usage,features,performance,principles,structure,standard,application method,maintenance,and notice etc to the users.This kind of texts are featured by frequent use of polysemys,compound words,initialisms,suffixes,technical terms,normalization structures and long complex sentences.It is highly objective and interdisciplinary.The present report,based on theories of Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation,concludes that the translation of scientific patents should co-consider accuracy,acceptability and standardization to realize the unity of “quality” and “effect” and analysis the translation techniques and methods of scientific texts from lexical,syntactic and textual level.The report consists of four chapters.The first chapter is an introduction about the background of the task and requirements from the client.The second chapter describes the translation process from the aspects of pre-translation work,theoretical basis and features of scientific texts.Before translation,the source text was read through carefully.Then translation tools and Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theories are determined at last.Translation process was almost carried out according to the time schedule for translation and the quality of target text is properly controlled.After several reviews on the target text,it was handed to the supervisor and professionals for reexamination and finally the feedback from the client wasreached.The third chapter is the core of the report.In this chapter,under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation and in accordance with three principles: accuracy,acceptability and standardization,specific translation techniques was analyzed from the lexical,syntactic and textual level.In the last chapter,the translation practice summarizes the experience and gains of the author.This report proves the feasibility of semantic and communicative translation theories via cases study.It is concluded that the “quality” and “effect” should be co-considered during translation process.Meanwhile,excellent bilingual transferring competence,solid professional knowledge and sufficient knowledge reservation are proved to be the guarantee of good translation versions of specification of scientific patent.
