| With the increasing international exchanges and the deepening scope of both domestic and foreign oil and gas exploration and development,professional translation is naturally playing an important role in international communication.Based on the C-E translation report Increased Natural Gas Proved Reserves of Bajiaochang(BJC)Gasfield Report,the author aims to explore the C-E translation techniques of engineering texts.Based on the German linguist Karl Buhler’s classification of language functions,Katharina Reiss,one of the representative of Germany Functional Translation,further classifies texts into information text,expressive text and operative text and puts forward specific translation methods concerning each type.Despite the existence of such hybrid types,Reiss states that ‘the transmission of the predominant function of the ST is the determining factor by which the TT is judged’.Because of the fact that the project belongs to engineering text and the main function is to convey information accurately,it can be classified into information text.Meanwhile,due to the fact that English focuses on hypotaxis while Chinese emphasizes parataxis and there exist complicated and hidden logical relations among the clauses of Chinese complex sentences,the author finds out that the difficulty in the project is the translation of Chinese complex sentences.Therefore,combining with the difference between English and Chinese complex sentences,the author has analyzed the translation of five kinds of Chinese complex sentences,namely successive complex sentences,causality complex sentences,progressive complex sentences,purpose complex sentences and explanatory complex sentences and put forward corresponding translation techniques under the guidance of Text Typology Theory.The author deems that when translating Chinese complex sentences,the translator should firstly read the original sentence carefully,confirm the type of the Chinese complex sentence,and conduct semantic analysis of the original so as to confirm the primary semantic level.Secondly,the translator should determine themain translation technique to be adopted,such as division,combination,linear translation,reversion and so forth.Thirdly,the translator should adopt a second or third translation technique according to the actual condition of the sentence,such as addition,the changing of voice etc.so as to make the logical relation of the translation more explicit and the translation more in line with the reading habits of the target readers,and furthermore achieve equivalence in the textual perspective and successful communication.Through summarizing the translation difficulties the translator encountered during this C-E translation practice and the corresponding solutions,the author hopes that this translation report can provide the MTI students who are interested in doing the oil and gas translation with some references and guidance. |
