Zhang Ding,one of China's most influential and versatile artists of contemporary Arts,established himself a successful man in a variety of fields and periods.He is a cartoonist,calligrapher,ink painter as well as a decorative painter,designer of art and educator of art.He was given the name of “An all-rounder in art”by the famous painter Yu Feng.Zhang Ding,as the chief image designer of the new China,is responsible for the designing work in the Founding Ceremony and the International Exhibition.He also designed the emblem for National Committee of the Chinese People ' s Political Consultative Conference,Chinese emblem and the first commemorative stamps in new China.He greatly influenced the idea of modern art transformed from the traditional art.At the same time,Zhang Ding was also involved in the preparation of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts,through which he cooperated with many designers to build a healthy education system for the new country.These works become to be a new trend in designing since 1950 s.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part,taking time as the outline,introduces the artistic life of Zhang Ding through comic,decorative painting,calligraphy and ink painting.The second part discusses the achievements of his design in visual communicative design an environmental art design,along with the contribution of Zhang Ding to education of art designing.The third part summarizes and make a deep analysis of his four major design concept,“revolutionary art”,“idealism”,“artistic civilian” and “localization”.The last part analyzes the contemporary value of Zhang Ding ' s art design,mainly in the cultural consciousness and in the creativity and theory of art design.The art design of Zhang Ding is broad and has a very wide range of time span.The author summarizes his art design activities and his works in terms of the time by discussing his contribution to art design education,and the make a deep research to the art design of Zhang Ding in order to help us review the development of Chinese art design since the 1940 s.The purpose of this paper is to explore the existing problems in the design and education of contemporary art and to achieve the comprehensive revitalization of contemporary art design in China.
