A Survey On How Well Do Learners' Translation Competence Fit Market Demands

Scholars researching the field focus on three aspects:learners,teachers and the market.They have discussed translation teaching from perspectives of learners'abilities,learners' needs,needs of the market,curriculums of universities,and how to educate translators.But these studies often prioritize a unilateral aspect,such as learner's needs or market demands.This thesis argues that learners,universities,and the translation market are interrelated in translation teaching.If learners are products in the market,universities(or teachers)are product manufacturers.Accordingly,the translation market is a buyer.When prices of products are the same,buyers emphasize nothing more than whether products' qualities meet their needs.Similarly,the translation market highly values whether translators' competence satisfies their demands.Hence,in the study of translation teaching in universities,it is necessary to take into account learner's competence and market's demands,which is important to analyze whether learner's competence fulfills market's demands and to explore how should learners cope with the demands,so as to find a breakthrough in improving translation teaching.To this end,the thesis attempts to explore three questions through research:First,how is the translation competence of students in the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation(GSTI)of Bejing Foreign Studies University(BFSU)?Second,what are the demands of the translation market?Third,whether learner's translation competence in BFSU meets market's needs?To get in-depth data on students' translation competence,a questionnaire survey is carried out among students in GSTI.Meanwhile,data from the translation market is collected to get a better picture of translation market's demands for professional translation talents.
