Under the advocacy of “Firm Chinese cultural confidence for better telling the story of China”,workers in the field of domestic movies come to realize the significance of movies in cultural promotion and communication. And not only that, movies featuring dialect start to attract more and more audiences. For example among all the popular movies released in 2016,Cock and Bull featuring Yunnan dialect,Kaili Blues featuring Guizhou dialect,Chongqing Hot Pot featuring Chongqing dialect and Mr.Six featuring Beijing dialect, have all performed quite well at box office and public praise. For a city, there is no doubt that movies featuring its dialect are a highly efficient way to promote the local culture to the world.During such cultural promotion for domestic movies equipping them with subtitle translation has become an obbligato step.Subjected to time and space limitations on the screen, subtitle translation is quite different from general translation, but one thing they share in common is that both of them need theoretical guidance. But looking back into the past,it can be seen that the field of subtitle translation has not built a mature theoretical system, especially so in domestic researches.Fortunately some researches overseas have presented rather mature translation theories that can offer valuable theoretical guidance and support, therefore it is necessary to conduct further research on how to effectively employ these theories to guide subtitle translation. In light of the abovementioned issues, this thesis attempts to discuss the guiding significance of Eugene Nida's theory of functional equivalence and Halliday's theories of dialect and register for dialect subtitle translation.Functional equivalence theory emphasizes on the target reader's response and requires using the most natural and closest target language to reproduce the message of the source language. While in dialect subtitle translation, translations that can help the audiences of the target language acquire message that is infinitely close to the message acquired by the audiences of the source language are successful translations, therefore the author of this thesis considers that the functional equivalence theory is applicable to the researches on dialect subtitle translation.Dialect and register are two important concepts from Halliday's system-functional linguistics.Dialect, idiolect in particular can reflect the speaker's personal information and social status.Register has three parameters, which are field, tenor and mode,of which tenor indicates the relations between the two communicators including their social status, attitude and communicative intention. In subtitle translation translators should always take the attitude and status of and relations between the speakers or communicators into consideration, therefore the author of this thesis believes that theories of dialect and register are applicable for researches on subtitle translation.Guided by the functional equivalence theory and theories of dialect and register, this thesis analyzes the subtitle translation methods and strategies of three movies,Chongqing Hot Pot,Let the Bullets Fly and Crazy Stone, which all feature Chongqing dialect. This thesis selects conversations with classic characteristics of Chongqing dialect from these three movies as the object of study, presents the characteristics of dialect subtitle translation, and analyzes translation methods and strategies adopted by the translators and the translation quality. In the end, this thesis proposes that the functional equivalence theory and theories of dialect and register provide dialect subtitle translation with a brand new perspective, can effectively guide dialect subtitle translation, and is of certain referential value for future movies featuring dialect subtitle. In addition the author of this thesis hopes that this study can call on more attention from translation researchers to be put into the field of dialect subtitle translation.
