| Cohesion proves an integral part of texts. The correct use of cohesion ensures the completeness and coherence of meaning. In English-Chinese translation, due to the difference in the structure of the two languages, not all the cohesive devices can be translated equivalently. In most cases,non-equivalent translation is needed to meet the requirements of different linguistic structures and specific contexts.Hence this thesis is going to discuss the application of non-equivalent translation of cohesive devices in the author’s translation practice-the English-Chinese translation of Harry Potter Power. This thesis first analyzes the cause behind the non-equivalent translation of grammatical cohesion, and then summarizes the strategies of translating grammatical cohesion(including reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction)based on the classification of cohesive devices suggested by Halliday and Hasan in Cohesion in English, with sentences from Harry Potter Power used as examples. This study finds that non-equivalent translation of cohesion devices caused by differences in the structure of English and Chinese can be applied in the translation of Harry Potter Power. The author further analyzes and summarizes the methods that can be used to translate the four types of grammatical cohesive devices. To be specific, reference is often omitted or translated into lexical cohesion, and translators can also change the type of reference to serve the sentence structure and the context;substitution can be translated into lexical cohesion and sometimes translators should deal with it flexibly according to the contexts;in the case of ellipsis, adding is often adopted;and conjunction is often omitted in English-Chinese translation. It is hoped that this thesis can serve as a reference for future research on the translation strategies of cohesive devices and a guidance for English-Chinese translation practices. |
