As the world’s population grows fast and with the fact that less than five percent of food served on people’s table comes from the ocean,it is the scientists and researchers’ responsibility to help people get healthy food. The global conference on aquatic animal health aims to solve that problem.Different from translation, interpreting takes place in real time.Simultaneity and immediacy are the most prominent characteristics of simultaneous interpreting(SI).Strong accents of speakers from non-English speaking countries, slips of the tongue, high delivery speed, repetitive self-correction and structural complexity are all features of speeches at an international conference. Therefore, many a crisis may arise during the process of SI and interpreters may constantly find themselves faced with capacity limitation and excessive “memory load” which need to be handled with care and tactics.Meanwhile, the fact that a large number of proper nouns, technical terms and phraseology regarding a specific field are frequently mentioned at the conference also makes the interpreting demanding and effortful.According to Gile’s Effort Model,SI is depicted as a process consisting of four core efforts, namely the Listening and analysis Effort(L),the Short-term Memory Effort(M),the speech Production Effort(P),and the Coordination Effort(C).He has also come up with different types of tactics that interpreters can turn to: namely comprehension tactics, preventive tactics and reformulation tactics. This report focuses on combing the tactics with their applications in interpreting global conferences on aquatic animal health from English to Chinese in the hope of finding out the author’s own deficiencies and perfecting the author’s interpreting skills as well as providing practical advice for SI-learners.
