Simultaneous interpretation is a difficult work during which comprehension and re-expression are key steps.This case study utilizes three elements—concision,precision and flexibility—under Li Changshuan's analytical framework of Understanding,Memorization,Expression and Emergency Response(UMEER)to analyze students' simultaneous interpretation in the lecture Oriental Thinking and Management Wisdom.Introduction is made to the whole lecture,the speaker's background and the difficulties in this lecture.Several pieces in this lecture and students' records are chosen for analyses.Problems in students' interpretation are identified and categorized into concision,precision and flexibility.These three elements are of overring importance in assessing the quality of simultaneous interpretation.Subdivision is made under concision and precision based on solutions to those problems.For concision,subcategories include summarizing oral language and the speaker's information.For precision,subcategories include comprehending words in the original language,utilizing background knowledge,and wording.An interpretation script is drafted for reference based on analyses,advice from the tutor and good performances among students.At last,causes of those problems in concision,precision and flexibility are identified.And solutions are provided for improvement.The purpose of this case study is to provide advice on how students learn simultaneous interpretation—knowledge and language.
