With the rapid development of the economical situation in China and the exploitation of“ Mandarin Fever ” throughout the world,Sri Lanka has also been fully aware of the importance of learning Chinese.Thus,two major universities in Sri Lanka have already started Chinese language undergraduate degree programs and they are successfully engaged in teaching Chinese for Sri Lankan students.in addition,the Confucius Institute,initiated by Hanban in China at University of Kelaniya,has also implemented Chinese courses for beginner's,intermediate and senior level students in Sri Lanka.So far,Chinese teaching in University of Kelaniya is based on the "New Practical Chinese Reader" and the main goal of Comprehensive Chinese teaching is to cultivate students' language knowledge such as pronunciation,vocabulary,grammar and Chinese characters,and also to introduce relevant cultural background while improving students' listening,speaking,reading and writing skills.However,considering the present situation of Chinese teaching at University of Kelaniya,students who graduate from the university do not reach the appropriate language level,they can't even communicate fluently in Chinese.According to the author's opinion the main reason for this is the problems existing in Chinese teaching in the university.This article,taking University of Kelaniya as an example,and on the basis of research methods such as questionnaires,classroom observation and teacher-student interviews,tries to investigate the present situation of intermediate level Comprehensive Chinese teaching at University of Kelaniya,discusses its problems and simultaneously puts forward some suggestions as to improve Chinese teaching in the university.The author hopes that this article has a positive effect on improving the quality of Chinese teaching in University of Kelaniya.The first chapter of this article introduces the background of the selected topic,the significance of the topic and its value,research reviews and research methods.The second chapter describes the situation of intermediate level Comprehensive Chinese teaching at University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka,including the historical development of Chinese teaching in Sri Lanka,The present situation of Chinese teaching in Sri Lanka and the current situation of Chinese teaching at University of Kelaniya;The third chapter is about an investigation based on the present situation of intermediate stage Comprehensive Chinese teaching at Kelaniya University,which includes an analysis of a questionnaire based on teachers andstudents;The fourth chapter is for the suggestions on improving the intermediate level Comprehensive Chinese teaching at University of Kelaniya,including the suggestions on Chinese classroom teaching,teaching methods,learning strategies,teacher's skills and also the suggestions on teaching materials;The conclusion makes a summary of the whole article and also puts forward the practical significance of this article and its shortcomings.
